This 4-hour course covered the basics of wind-diesel power systems, including power systems technology and some examples of current hybrid power systems. This introductory level, short course targeted to those who have little or no experience in wind-diesel power systems. The session enhanced the effectiveness of the Wind-Diesel Workshop for new participants.
September 29-30, 2004
The Wind-Diesel 2004 Workshop presented the latest information in operating experience, design concepts, system components, related R&D, comparative economics, financing options, and institutional delivery strategies from around the world. Following the workshop, participants had the opportunity to make site visits to operating Alaska wind-diesel systems.
October 1-2, 2004
A great opportunity to visit three commercial wind-diesel projects in rural Alaska. Participants flew to Kotzebue, Selawik, and St. Paul villages to see three different systsm architectures and turbines, and to talk with local operators and village leaders on the operations and value of retrofitting diesel mini-grids with wind turbines and associated controls.

St. Paul
Saint Paul Island, the largest of the Pribilof Islands, is located 700 miles west of Anchorage, literally in the middle of the Bering Sea. The 48 square mile island is well known to naturalists as home to one of the largest populations of sea birds in the world, and the summer resting place and breeding ground of virtually the entire California Fur Seal herd, today numbering approximately one million highly protected animals. Saint Paul has historically been and remains today the largest permanent Aleut native population in the world. TDX Power's first energy generation facility was built on Saint Paul Island. Completed in 1999, the wind energy based electric and thermal cogeneration facility was widely regarded as the more technologically advanced wind energy power projects in America. The TDX Power wind/diesel hybrid facility is world famous for its efficiency and reduction in diesel fuel consumption. The 120 foot tall turbine is a major point of pride for the ecologically conscious Aleut community of Saint Paul.
Selawik
The Selawik Village Project is about 70 miles east of Kotzebue and three miles north of the Arctic Circle. The power system is owned by Alaska Village Electric Cooperative and consists of four 65-kW Atlantic Orient wind turbines connected to a 1660-kW, three-engine diesel system. A 160-kW electric
boiler, a secondary load, adds heat to the plant's heat recovery system which in turn supplies heat to the village water plant. The wind turbine controller and secondary load controller were supplied by Sustainable Automation. Kotzebue Electric Association assisted with turbine erection.
