Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards are requirements for sellers of electricity to retail customers to include in their supply portfolio a specified fraction of eligible renewable energy. In New England, four states have adopted such standards: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, and most recently Rhode Island. Vermont is also moving towards implementing a similar policy. Each treats wind as an eligible resource, and all but Maine require increasing percentages of renewable energy supply over time, creating demand for new wind generation. The following policies are listed in order of their potential to drive demand for new wind power.
