Maine Comprehensive Land Use Plan: Public Workshops Re-ScheduledDate: 5/1/2008 to 5/8/2008Location: MEMaine's Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) operations and decisions are guided by a 10-Year Comprehensive Plan, which the Commission is in the process of updating.
LURC staff will host a series of informal public workshops from late April 2008 through early May 2008 to amend the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) for the unorganized territories of Maine. The purpose of the workshops is to provide information about trends and issues, answer questions, and gather public feedback about the draft and important issues. Written comments can be made at any time during this process, and the staff is available to meet with organizations to discuss the CLUP revision.
The workshop schedule is available.
The CLUP will undoubtedly take into account the just-passed bill on wind power development in the state, because the bill directs LURC to establish expedited permitting areas, as well as different standards for assessing visual impacts from wind development. Date: 5/3/2008Location: San Diego, CA8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

The Great Lakes Wind Collaborative (GLWC) will hold its 1st Annual Meeting May 6-7, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Buffalo, New York. The meeting will provide an opportunity for interested stakeholders to learn more about this new collaborative and become engaged in wind issues on a regional level. Presentations on the role of wind energy in meeting the Great Lakes region's energy needs of the 21st century as well as the Midwestern Governors Association's Energy Security and Climate Change Platform and its implications for wind energy in the Great Lakes region will be part of the program. Topical presentations and discussions on issues surrounding off shore wind development and environmental and wildlife impacts of wind power are also part of the two-day event. The newly-formed GLWC will unveil a first year workplan. Participants will be invited to provide feedback on the first year activities.
Breakout sessions will further provide participants with an opportunity to help shape future activities of the Great Lakes Wind Collaborative. Specific topical areas to be discussed include environmental planning, siting and permitting, research gaps, off shore aspects, transmission and power system integration, and economic development aspects of wind power. Interested stakeholders can go to the Web site to sign up for periodic updates on GLWC activities. A draft agenda and registration information for the meeting will be available on the GLWC Web site in the near future.
The GLWC is a group established to build consensus and identify and address issues affecting the planning, development, and operation of wind power facilities in the Great Lakes region. The GLWC provides a forum for dialogue and an opportunity for analysis and exchange of information among key stakeholders to facilitate sustainable wind power development in the region.
The Great Lakes Commission serves as the Secretariat for the GLWC, with funding in part from the U.S. Department of Energy - National Renewal Energy Laboratory. Ag Outreach Webcast: Wind FarmingDate: 5/8/2008Location: COPhone: (303) 384-69629:00 am PST, 10:00 am MST, 11:00 am CST, and 12:00 pm EST
The second in a series of Webcasts sponsored by Wind Powering America with the purpose of reaching out to the agricultural community. The presentation will last approximately 1 hour and will be followed by a half hour available for questions and answers.
The topic of this Webcast is "Wind Farming" and will be presented by David Kolsrud. David Kolsrud has over 13 years of experience in renewable energy and is well recognized nationwide. He has helped to develop, organize, and fund over 20 renewable energy projects — primarily ethanol, biodiesel, and wind projects. In 2006, he formed DAK Renewable Energy, which manages 11 LLCs with investments in multiple renewable projects. David's thesis has been that community ownership of biofuels plants has had a significant positive benefit which can be repeated or enhanced using wind energy. He will talk about wind farming — some of the steps from conception to completion. David provides a supplementary document, "Locally Owned Energy Projects: From Conception to Completion (PDF 112 PDF) Download Adobe Reader."
Please find the details for the Webcast below and we look forward to having you join us.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Corrie Christol.

Agenda and registration information will be posted, once available, on the Tribal Energy Program Web site. Date: 5/13/2008 to 5/14/2008Location: Newport, RIHyatt Regency Newport Hotel, Goat Island. This annual two-day conference unites industry leaders and public officials with a stake in the Northeast energy markets to discuss and debate critical industry issues. Concerns over climate change and an increased desire to control carbon emissions have spurred debate over an appropriate fuel mix to meet increasing regional demand. Many questions remain unanswered. How should more renewables and demand side management policies be encouraged? How can market price signals be delivered promptly and efficiently to end users? How can energy facility siting be encouraged, without sacrificing environmental protection? How can resource adequacy requirements be met given growing regional demand and aging electric generation facilities? Finally, how can an adequate transmission and distribution infrastructure be maintained, allowing benefits from solving these issues to flow to all end users? The implementation of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and the carbon tax debate further complicate these concerns. This conference will update attendees on the search for solutions and offer insight into the quandary of balancing energy supply needs with climate change concerns. Date: 5/14/2008Location: Hudson, MAPhone: 877-878-4060The Alternative Energy Store, 43 Broad Street, Suite A408. 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Connecticut Wind Working Group MeetingDate: 5/21/2008Location: CTPhone: (860) 257-2345 Funding Options and Financial Incentives for On-Site Renewable Energy Projects WebinarDate: 5/22/2008Location: DCNational Association of Counties. 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Eastern
Public sector entities are helping meet their energy needs with on-site renewable energy facilities. One key to the long-term success of an on-site renewable project is financing: how will construction be funded and what incentives can be leveraged to ensure the financial feasibility of the project? In addition to county case studies, this Webinar will cover:
- Financing options available to counties
- Performance contracting as a deal structure
- Government, utility, and market incentives for on-site renewable energy projects
- Monetizing the attributes of renewable energy, such as renewable energy credits (REC's), Energy Efficiency Certificates (EECs)
The Webinar is free thanks to the generous support of Green Government sponsors. The primary intended audience is any elected official or county staff; however anyone interested in learning more about the county role in green government practices is encouraged to register. Date: 5/22/2008Location: Rochester, MIOakland University's Meadowbrook Hall. With the proper resources, wind power and wood chip boiler projects can provide cost savings while simultaneously offering living laboratories for renewable energy systems within our schools, colleges, and cities. Come learn who is doing this now and how to bring this vision to your institution.
The workshop is for administrators and facilities managers for public institutions such as K-12 school districts, higher education institutions, and municipalities who are looking toward sustainable energy systems with the following goals:
- reduce your reliance on fossil fuels
- hedge against future utility rate increases
- integrate sustainable technologies into your learning environment
- install energy projects with a positive cash flow
- invest in Michigan or regional based energy resources
- reduce your institutions carbon footprint
