U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is the principal source of information for individuals wanting to learn more about intellectual property, and its Frequently Asked Questions page is a good beginning. Independent inventors and small business owners should also be aware of the special "Inventors' Resources" section.
Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries
Every state has at least one Patent and Trademark Depository Library. PTDLs serve as mini-versions of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, offering access to many of the same resources and capabilities.
U.S. Copyright Office
This site serves as a starting point for basic questions about copyrights. It
lists fees, records, publications, and licensing information, and includes links
to the Federal Register, current legislation, regulations, and other intellectual
property subjects.
WebPatent
Though a commercial site, WebPatent.com is also an incredible source of detailed, free information
on all aspects of intellectual property. The site is sponsored by an experienced
patent agent who himself started and operated a small technology development
and commercialization company. Visitors to the site can review past issues of
WebPatent's informative newsletter.
Thomson Delphion
This is a fee-based service that provides access to patent and trademark data
for the United States and over 70 other registration sites worldwide. Many potential
overseas markets can be accessed from this service. Used to search for existing
registrations of inventors' ideas.
Inventors
This site provides general information about patents and sources of other information,
but also is a commercial site with intrusive pop-up advertising. Good as a starting
place for a comprehensive search. The Web site contains listings for inventor
magazines, organizations, and various services, and contains stories of famous
inventors who started with a small idea and built it into a patented device.
Intellectual Property Law Server
Information about intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, and
copyrights can be found on this site. Resources include comprehensive links,
general information, space for professionals to publish articles, and forums
for discussions on related issues. The news feature lists intellectual property
features on a daily basis. This feature allows individuals and small businesses
to keep tabs on relevant topics using a keyword search.
World Intellectual Property Organization
WIPO provides news and information about the division of the United Nations dedicated
to the protection of intellectual property internationally. The information on
this site is primarily of benefit to show what treaties allow for registration
of intellectual property patents, trademarks, and copyrights across national
borders. It also contains information on current trade restrictions between countries
that could serve as marketing barriers.
Pierce Law Center's IP Mall
This is a comprehensive compilation of articles, audio and visual materials,
academic outlines and court-related documents and rules relating to intellectual
property. The site is maintained by the Pierce Law group and has a web resources
section broken down by subject matters of interest to intellectual property for
small organizations.
Intellectual Property Owners Association
This association serves
owners of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Its Web site contains
information on changes in intellectual property law and serves as a clearinghouse
for discussion of revisions of federal policy revisions and their impact
on small industry and business.
Free Advice
This site contains free advice on trade secrets, nondisclosure, and other intellectual
property subjects. The Web site is a portal for companies and law firms that
have paid to be listed therein. Although commercial in nature, it has links that
provide quick access to other free resources. It gives trademark listings for
North America and Europe, which can be of value for product name registration.
Patent Café
Patent Café has resources relating to the whole spectrum of IP issues. The
Web site is commercial in nature, but users may find sources here that are not
found anywhere else. Patent Café sells publications that provide information
on how small inventors can find capital and license technology, as well as providing
advice for small business owners on intellectual property law and valuation of
small technological business assets.
Inventor's HQ
This free informational and resource site for the novice inventor offers
help with developing prototypes and obtaining licensing, patents, and royalty
agreements. The site managers will answer questions as quickly and thoroughly
as possible when posted on a message board.
Intellectual Property Asset Management Newsletter
This electronic newsletter addresses a wide array of issues and questions regarding
the development and management of intellectual property.
