DER technologies range from technologies that are significantly more polluting than central station power plants, to zero-emission, nonpolluting technologies (see the table of DER characteristics). Your choice depends in part upon your environmental goals. If your company has made a commitment to minimize air emissions, for instance, that might sway your choices toward the cleaner technology options.
Of course, local and regional considerations also come into play. Will you have difficulty siting a generator with high air emissions? Are there air emissions restrictions in your community or region that could limit your ability to operate the unit, thus hurting its viability and/or profitability?
One factor to keep in mind is the use that the DER technology is intended for. A unit to be used only during power emergencies could justifiably have higher air emissions than a unit that operates as a primary power source.
