The least-expensive power option is worthless if the energy supply isn't available. This consideration applies to all generation technologies. Is a natural gas line available, and if not, is it affordable to install one? Can you contract for the amount of diesel fuel you need at an affordable rate? Does it need to be shipped in to your location, and are there environmental risks associated with that? Will you be able to store on site the amount of liquified natural gas that you need between shipments?
Resource availability is particularly important for renewable energy systems, which must rely on the resources available at your site. For solar energy, resource assessment data is available to help you calculate the amount available at your location. Wind resource data is also available, but the great variability in wind resources generally demands that on-site measurements be used to determine the actual wind resource available.
