Advanced Materials Award Winners

"Melt Infiltrated Ceramic Matrix Composites for Shrouds and Combustor Liners of Advanced Industrial Gas Turbines," led by General Electric Corporate Research and Development, Niskayuna, New York, with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding of $2.7 million. General Electric is targeting a new ceramic matrix composite for its modern gas-turbine power base.

"Advanced Materials in Advanced Industrial Gas Turbines," led by Teledyne Continental Motors, Toledo, Ohio, with DOE funding of $300,000. Teledyne will investigate the low-cost manufacture and use of advanced materials for improved performance in microturbines.

"Cooperative Research and Development for Advanced Materials in Advanced Industrial Gas Turbines," led by Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp., Orlando, Florida, with DOE funding of $750,000. Siemens Westinghouse will advance the development of thermal barrier coatings that protect expensive metal parts from the intense high-temperature gas turbine environment.

"Advanced Materials for Mercury 50 Gas Turbine Combustion System," led by Solar Turbines Inc., San Diego, California, with DOE funding of $3.1 million. Application of advanced materials in Solar Turbine's new Mercury 50 industrial gas turbine will improve durability and life cycle costs.
