Integrated Energy Systems (CHP)

Integrated energy systems are packaged cooling, heating, and power (CHP) systems. CHP is the sequential generation of electricity and thermal energy from a common energy source.

The DE program is involved in the design and testing of integrated energy systems, and works to increase acceptance of CHP in end-use sectors by demonstrating new systems; analyzing energy, economic, and environmental performance; and building public-private partnerships with industry consortia in selected markets.

The program also addresses regulatory and institutional barriers to distributed energy including air quality regulations, utility interconnection and rates, and environmental siting and permitting.

Additionally, the program supports eight CHP Regional Application Centers that assist in the deployment of CHP in their respective regions.
