DOE's Energy Information Administration (EIA) provides comprehensive natural gas information. Some of EIA's most up-to-date state-based data is presented in tables covering more than one state, or in a wide selection of formats. This valuable natural gas resource information is listed here instead of on the DE Web site's individual state pages.
- Marketed production (PDF 34 KB) — Recent monthly data on natural gas production in each of the 18 states with significant reserves, plus national totals. A single table lists all of the states, and includes some historical data.
- U.S. natural gas reserves (PDF 162 KB) — Provided for the country as a whole, with detailed information for those states with significant reserves. Includes a map showing the amount of natural gas available in each state.
- Distribution of natural gas wells — From this menu page, select the specific data (table or graph) of interest.
- Natural gas prices for all 50 states and the District of Columbia (most recent monthly data):
- Average city gate price (PDF 24 KB)
- Average price of deliveries to residential consumers (PDF 24 KB)
- Average price of sales to commercial consumers (PDF 23 KB)
- Average price of sales to industrial consumers (PDF 24 KB)
- Average price of deliveries to electric utility consumers (PDF 25 KB)
The following American Gas Association publications, available free on the Internet, provide information on trends in U.S. natural gas supplies:
The Renewable Resource Data Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory provides comprehensive information on biomass, solar, wind, and geothermal power resources in the United States, in the form of publications, data, and maps.
Unlike geothermal power systems, geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) can be used virtually anywhere in the country. For more information about using GHPs, visit our geothermal heat pump page.
Currently unavailable from the federal government due to security concerns, electricity and natural gas infrastructure maps are available from commercial organizations for a fee. The maps listed below are sold by the Power Marketing Association.
Electric transmission system map — Shows major transmission lines (230 kV and above), utility power plants (200 MW and above), North American Reliability Council (NERC) regions, and investor-owned utility services areas of more than 10,000 consumers. Order form: (PDF 474 KB)
Natural gas systems map — Identifies more than 465,000 miles of natural gas pipelines in North America and the Gulf of Mexico, features more than 2685 interconnects and 260 underground storage sites, includes major marketing hubs, and shows pipeline diameter, pipeline operator, and pump station details.
