Load reduction projects include energy efficiency as well as renewable energy technologies that don't produce power but do reduce the use of conventional energy sources. Along with a wide variety of energy efficiency technologies, load reduction technologies include geothermal heat pumps, passive solar heating and cooling, solar hot water, and transpired air collectors. Many buildings combine any or all of these technologies to maximize energy savings, and often use renewable power sources (such as solar electric systems) as well.
Examples of commercial and institutional buildings that combine many of these features can be found on the High Performance Buildings Web site, a project of DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and on the DOE High Performance Building Initiative Web site. Examples of all types of buildings that combine many of these features can be found in the list of Top Ten "Green" Projects, awarded on Earth Day 2002 by the American Institute of Architects' Committee on the Environment.
