This page provides some examples of the government's use of distributed energy resources.
Some of the following documents are available as Adobe Acrobat PDFs. Download Acrobat Reader.
Military Uses
For a discussion of military applications of distributed generation, see "U.S. Armed Forces Embrace DG" in the January/February 2000 edition (PDF 395 KB) of the Distributed Generation Monitor, provided by Resource Dynamics Corporation.
The Army Energy Program has a distributed energy Web site that provides information about some of its demonstration programs.
Other Federal Government Installations
The Federal Energy Management Program's DER/CHP Web site has lots of information about federal installations of distributed energy systems.
Following are some specific case studies:
- 102-kWh battery bank supplements off-grid PV system (PDF 183 KB) — Channel Islands National Park, Santa Rosa Island, California.
- 900-W solar system with 4.5-kW propane generator and battery backup helps power national park (PDF 196 KB) — Ainahou Ranch, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii.
- Federal Energy Regulatory Commission headquarters saves $61,000 annually using CHP and energy conservation (PDF 499 KB) — Union Center Plaza IV Building, Washington, DC.
- Lighting upgrades, load reduction strategies, and geothermal heating cut energy costs by $33,000 annually — Boise Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, Boise, Idaho.
