Some electricity users want, or need, to meet their energy requirements with on-site power generation. A few of these installations use the electricity grid as a source of backup power during failure or maintenance of the on-site generator. Others are off-grid, usually incorporating load-reduction measures and an energy storage device for backup power.
Some examples:
- 660-kW wind installation with diesel generator powers remote community — Kotzebue Electric Association, Kotzebue, Alaska.
- 102-kWh battery bank supplements off-grid photovoltaic system — Channel Islands National Park, Santa Rosa Island, California. (PDF 183 KB) Download Acrobat Reader.
- 1.5-kW wind turbine and 1-kW PV array power off-grid home — Jostad residence, Cayucos, California.
- Three off-grid 7.5-kW wind turbines power public radio transmitter — KBSJ radio transmitter, Ellen D Mountain, near Jackpot, Nevada.
- Net-metered 10-kW wind turbine with solar modules — Schiebel residence, Tehachapi, California. This is an example of an energy-independent home that uses the grid for backup power.
