Working with leaders from industry, academia, and research organizations,
DOE facilitates the development of technology roadmaps to anticipate
opportunities and meet upcoming challenges in the building and equipment
industry.
Building technology roadmaps help to align government resources
with the high-priority needs identified by industry. They provide
a framework for partnership among the diverse groups within each
sector, and they serve as a starting point for ongoing dialogue,
guiding continued cooperation and research.
Vision
2020: The Lighting Technology Roadmap (PDF 1.4 MB) charts a
long-term vision for more efficient, effective, and economical lighting
solutions. High-priority topics targeted for further exploration
include solid state lighting and lighting controls. The
Promise of Solid-State Lighting for General Illumination: Light
Emitting Diodes and Organic Light Emitting Diodes (PDF 329 KB)
provides a summary of the results from a follow-on roadmapping effort.
The topic of lighting controls will be explored in more depth in
a tightly focused roadmap effort currently under way.
High
Performance Commercial Buildings: A Technology Roadmap (PDF 1.1
MB) explores the whole building approach to design and construction,
which coordinates the efforts of all participants in the commercial
building process. A focused roadmap effort is currently under way
to further explore the high-priority topic of advanced building
controls.
The
Building Envelope Technology Roadmap (PDF 809 KB) guides an
integrated approach to building envelope design. The Window
Industry Technology Roadmap (PDF 859 KB) envisions windows as
affordable "appliances in the wall" that function as active and
interactive parts of a true building system. An ongoing Web site,
Envelope and Windows Forum,
allows stakeholders to share their views on the roadmaps and future
R&D directions, and stay updated on the latest R&D activities.
Additional industry roadmap documents include the Heating,
Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology Roadmap.
The Building Technologies Program is working with the Air-Conditioning
and Refrigeration Technology Institute to implement HVAC&R Research
for the 21st Century. This roadmap outlines strategies to advance
the energy efficiency, comfort, and environmental quality of heating,
ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
The Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) has
developed a series of Residential
Buildings Technology Roadmaps to improve the quality, durability,
environmental performance, energy efficiency, and affordability
of housing. DOE is currently working with appliance manufacturers,
electronic communications companies and trade associations on an
appliance technology roadmap effort, identifying barriers and opportunities
for the development of smart appliances and networked equipment
and services for homes.
