Photos of Building America/new home construction

Building America teams incorporate innovative energy- and material-saving technologies and building practices right from the start of the home building process, in the design phase.

New home construction presents an opportunity to incorporate energy-saving features right from the start. Across the nation, savvy homeowners and home builders are demonstrating that energy-smart building choices can help homeowners save on energy bills and, at the same time, give homebuilders a competitive advantage. Energy-smart building choices:

  • Improve energy performance
  • Lower energy bills
  • Reduce construction costs and waste
  • Reduce callback and warranty problems

DOE's Building America Program combines the knowledge and resources of industry leaders with DOE technical capabilities to provide energy solutions for production housing. Building America teams use a systems engineering approach to home building to produce homes that use 30% to 70% less energy, with little or no impact on the cost of construction. This systems approach not only saves energy, it also improves builder productivity and helps reduce construction time and waste by as much as 50%.

ENERGY STAR Homes are 30% more efficient than standard homes built to meet national model energy codes. Building a home with the ENERGY STAR label means lower energy bills, increased comfort, and improved indoor air quality for homeowners. Home builders can increase profits and customer satisfaction, and stand out in the marketplace.

Green Home Building Programs
