Your Home's Energy Use

The first step to improving the energy efficiency of your home is to find out which parts of your home use the most energy. A home energy audit will show you where these are and suggest the most effective measures for reducing your energy costs. You can conduct a simple home energy audit yourself, you can contact your local utility, or you can call an independent energy auditor for a more comprehensive examination.

See the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Energy Savers site for more information about home energy audits. The section titled Your Home's Energy Use, provides comprehensive information about energy auditing, including a link to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Virtual Home Energy Advisor, which helps you to perform your own energy audit.

For more information about the cost-effectiveness of saving energy, see the DOE publication, Energy Efficiency Pays! (PDF 299 KB)
