Zion's Geology
Zion's dramatic canyon walls reach 2,000 to 3,000 feet tall, and the overall elevation of the park ranges from 3,666 feet (1,128 meters) to 8,726 feet (2,660 meters). Zion is made up of sedimentary rock deposited during the Triassic and Jurassic periods (250 million to 150 million years ago). Much of the rock is sandstone, but it includes limestone, shale, mudstone, and conglomerate.
