Disaster Recovery and Building Reconstruction

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is working to encourage cost-effective, durable and energy-efficient building reconstruction in the wake of recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region. The application of proven building technologies and designs can make a long-term difference in areas vulnerable to natural disasters, resulting in safer, healthier, more economically viable communities that are less susceptible to disaster.

To address needs in the Gulf Coast region, DOE's Building Technologies Program is partnering with State Energy Offices (SEOs) to encourage regional exchange of information and best practices. DOE and the SEOs are also partnering with the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, local universities, and local extension services to utilize their ready-made capacity for educational program delivery. In addition, the Building Technologies Program is partnering with its national Building America network of building scientists, energy analysts, and builder training professionals to provide technical assistance, training workshops, building plan review, and information services.

To help advance information exchange, we've gathered relevant resources and information here for state and local officials, builders, and consumers. In addition, we've also collected resources on training opportunities. Please view the resources on all of these pages for additional relevant information.
