International Builders' Show—Building America Activities

October 2004

International Builders' Show logo

The Orlando County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, will house the International Builders' Show—the world's largest and most comprehensive building industry show—on January 13-16, 2005. You can explore more than 1.5 million ft2 of the latest and most advanced building products and services ever assembled. See the latest innovations with hands-on demonstrations and working models in more than 300 building industry categories.

Building America provides technical support for energy system engineering, performance analysis, onsite quality control, and performance measurements for the following activities. Its goal is to reduce whole house energy use by 30%.

The New American Home®

The New American Home® demonstrates concepts, materials, designs, and construction techniques that can be replicated in housing built anywhere and in any price range. The New American Home® program incorporates energy efficiency, indoor air quality, safety, and market value into its homes.

The New American Home® is the official showcase house of the annual International Builders' Show. It is also a for-sale product that balances architectural freedom and the bottom line.

The Sarah Susanka Not So Big House

This year's Not So Big Showhouse project demonstrates the design concepts of architect and author Sarah Susanka, and incorporates principles of energy efficiency and sustainability. The showhouse tour is a serious, multimedia learning experience that mixes hosted audio tours with informational video and electronic product information.

The house is being built by the Bradford Building Corporation in NorthLake Park at Lake Nona in Orlando, Florida. The homes at this park have a Charleston-style feel with neotraditional front porches and rear-entry garages. The residential neighborhood is scaled to the pedestrian.

The Palm Harbor Home

This 2100 ft2, three-section modular home is currently in the design stage, and is slated for production in mid-December 2004. Some of the planned energy efficiency features are an unvented attic with structural insulated panel roof, unvented crawlspace, efficient envelope and mechanical equipment, heat pump water heater (free dehumidification), and positive pressure ventilation.

EnergyValue Housing AwardSM Ceremony

The EnergyValue Housing Award honors builders who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency in the design, construction, and marketing of new homes. The ceremony to present the 2005 award will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on January 13, 2005 in Ballroom F of the Rosen Centre Hotel. It is semiformal and will include a plated dinner, bar, presentation on this year's winning practices, addresses from key industry leaders, and networking with EVHA judges, winners, and sponsors.
