GIG HARBOR, Washington — Results from an annual production survey conducted by the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) with 61 SIP manufacturing companies show that the industry' growth rate continues to be strong as more and more builders explore the benefits of the high energy efficiency levels and correspondingly lower monthly utility bills in homes constructed with SIPS. SIP panels provide relatively high R-values because of lower conductance through walls, which also have less framing lumber and reduced levels of air infiltration.
According to survey results, the number of homes built with SIPs has grown from approximately 8,000 units (0.7% of total single family housing starts) in 1997 to 12,000 units (0.9% of total single family housing starts) in 2002. Survey results included homes built with only SIP walls; homes with SIP walls and roofs; and homes with SIP floors, walls, and roof.
Additional details from the 2002 Survey:
- SIP production for 2002 was 51 million square feet.
- 70% of production was used in either single family or multifamily housing.
- 30% of production was in nonresidential construction, including agriculture buildings.
- An estimated 2,300 nonresidential building were built with SIPs.
