ACEEE Promotes Energy Efficiency Programs to Reduce Natural Gas Use

October 2003

Natural gas is facing a looming crisis in available supply and price. In the face of this potential crisis, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and the Building America Program are working to try to increase energy efficiency and reduce natural gas demand.

In 2002, ACEEE conducted a study to identify potential programs that will promote energy efficiency. Programs promoting the following efficiency measures have the potential to save about 2.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas by 2020, which makes up more than 10% of the projected natural gas use in 2020 in the United States. The measures are grouped by sector, showing the potential in each area.

Some of these measures could be effective and produce savings in the near-term; some will take longer to implement. Building America has completed over 20,000 residential projects and has broadened its 2004 research objectives to target 40% to 70% reductions in hot water, space conditioning and appliance energy use.
