Sanford Smith, corporate manager of real estate and facilities at Toyota Motor Sales, USA, was the keynote speaker at the dinner ceremony. Smith heads a department of 40 associates who are involved in the planning, development, and operations of all facilities projects. His portfolio consists of a diverse range of facility types, including office space, ports, and distribution centers.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center coordinated an educational session in which the 2005 EVHA winners discussed their most effective energy efficiency upgrades in various climates. "Energy Efficiency Trade-Offs by Climate" was held January 15 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Orange County Convention Center.

The EVHA is the nation's preeminent energy efficiency award. It honors builders who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency into all aspects of new home construction. Builders submitted detailed applications in any of five categories (Affordable, Custom/Demonstration, Factory-Built, Multifamily, Production) in one of three climate regions (Cold, Moderate, Hot). A panel of industry experts evaluated the applications and winners were selected based on Energy Value, Design, Construction, Marketing and Customer Relations, and Energy Programs. The NAHB Energy Subcommittee founded the EVHA program in 1996. Now in its tenth year, the EVHA has received 355 applications and honored 164 of those as EVHA winners. EVHA winners built more than 35,000 homes during the past 9 years.
