Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conversions

Factory-made plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are not currently available to the public. There is no standard procedure for testing PHEVs, and no conversion of HEV to PHEV has been certified. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) developed the J1711 recommended practice in 1999 for testing and reporting the fuel economy of HEVs and included language to address PHEVs. An SAE committee is currently working to review those test procedures and reporting methods for PHEVs.
