Natural Gas Vehicle Availability

The availability of new light-duty original equipment manufacturer natural gas vehicles (NGVs) has declined in recent years. However, certified installers can economically and reliably retrofit many light-duty vehicles for natural gas operation. Natural gas engines and fueling systems are also available for heavy-duty vehicles such as transit buses and refuse trucks.

Light-Duty Vehicles

As of this writing, only one production light-duty natural gas vehicle is available: the Honda Civic GX sedan. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has called the natural gas Civic GX the cleanest internal-combustion vehicle on Earth. This document lists light-, medium-, and heavy-duty natural gas vehicles and engines available directly from large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or via qualified system retrofitters using EPA-/CARB-certified systems from small-volume OEMs. It also provides manufacturer and retrofitter contact information. Heavy-Duty Vehicles

See the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation's list of Available Natural Gas Vehicles and Engines (PDF 240 KB) for the most recent list of available heavy-duty natural gas engines. Download Adobe Reader. These engines can be used for various applications, such as transit buses, school buses, and refuse trucks. Contact the engine manufacturers (see contact information in Available Natural Gas Vehicles and Engines) to find out which vehicles feature their engines. Alternatively, contact heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers to learn about the natural gas vehicles they offer. The U.S. Department of Energy previously published the Heavy Vehicle and Engine Resource Guide (PDF 993 KB). Download Adobe Reader. Although it is no longer current, the Guide still provides valuable information about the types of heavy-duty alternative fuel engines and vehicles that have been available as well as contact information for key manufacturers and information sources.
