Fuel Suppliers
You may use the resources and contacts on this page to assist you with your infrastructure needs, but understand that the U.S. Department of Energy does not necessarily endorse or recommend these agencies (see our disclaimer).
Local providers have been supplying E85 for nearly a decade. These include ethanol plants, retail station chains and local petroleum companies. Recent changes involving federal taxation of ethanol-blended fuels and incentives available to fuel suppliers have made E85 more widely available. Previously, few fuel suppliers were able or willing to handle sometimes complex tax issues that were involved in supplying E85 to fleet operations and retail service stations. The increasing availability of E85-capable vehicles and high petroleum prices have also helped to motivate fuel suppliers and retailers to consider the potential of E85 as an alternative to gasoline.
In 2005, CHS Inc. announced the availability of E85 at 22 Magellan pipeline terminals in eight states (CO, IA, IL, KS, MN, ND, NE, SD). CHS is well known in a large region of the United States, stretching from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest and the Canadian border to Texas. CHS supplies Cenex-branded products to more than 1,600 convenience stores and cooperatives. The company's move to improve the availability of low-priced E85 will significantly add to the development of E85 stations for fleet and retail customers throughout this region and beyond. Marathon-Ashland Petroleum is one major fuel supplier that began offering E85 at 14 terminals throughout the Midwest in summer 2004. View the Marathon-Ashland Petroleum flyer describing their terminal locations (PDF 308 KB).
If they are not familiar with E85 blending, taxation, pricing and seasonal blending changes, you may need to educate your current fuel supplier. If you need assistance or more information in doing so, please contact the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition at 1-877-485-8595.
